A recent survey from Business Today ranks Hyderabad as the 4th best city to live in India, only after Gurgaon, Chandigarh and Chennai. The rankings were released in the June 28, 2009 issue of Business Today magazine. The report compares this city with other major cities of India in terms of infrastructure, consistent power supply, employment opportunities, etc.

However, unlike other cities the strong affiliation to the Satyam fiasco – gives a qualitatively negative sentiment. (From the magazine “The year 2009 hasn’t been a good one for Hyderabad. … Ramalinga Raju – brought much ill repute … massive scam at Satyam … “)

Life at Work – Rank 7

  • Per Capita Income: Rs. 69,493 p.a. (lags behind Thane and Vadodara).
  • Job Ads with minimum 0-1 year experience: 3,279 (lags behind Faridabad, Noida and Gurgaon).
  • Employment Growth Rate: 10% (#3)

After Work – Rank 10

  • Registered Hospitals: 185 (Ranked 7th)
  • Only 71% own a house (4th lowest)
  • Literacy Rate: 83%

Hyderabad is one of the nerve centers for much of the country’s IT activities. Its state-of-the-art facilities unrivalled by most cities in India are attracting droves of reputed MNCs such as Microsoft, Google and Amazon. Its world-class international airport is the envy of other Indian cities. Its outstanding business school (Indian School of Business), top-notch colleges and universities allow it to feed many of the companies with skilled and qualified workers.

However, there are some issues with power supply, public transport systems, etc. The Rs.12,312 crore Hyderabad Metro project deal, which is expected to complete by 2011-2012, will enable the city with faster and more efficient public transport system.

As far as ease of doing business is concerned, Hyderabad’s a hard act to beat.

Not sure quality nightspots is an issue from my point of view. However, lack of restaurants where you can have a decent eating out experience is definitely an issue. Agree that much more needs to be done on the public transport and about the power cuts

Here is the list of top ten cities –

  1. Gurgaon
  2. Chandigarh
  3. Chennai
  4. Hyderabad
  5. Mumbai
  6. Noida
  7. Bangalore
  8. Pune
  9. Surat
  10. Ahmedabad

Interestingly, neither Delhi nor Calcutta made it into this top 10 list. At least for Delhi – 2 satellite cities i.e. Gurgaon and Noida made it into the list. No such saving grace for Calcutta.
