Association of German Internists (BDI) warned people suffering from diabetes that they should take proper and better care of their feet and maintain them as injury-free as possible in order to prevent what is called a diabetic foot.
Several foot problems related to diabetic foot are caused due to nerve and blood-vessel injury resulting in a loss of feeling and reduced blood flow in the feet. In order to maintain feet free of damage and fungal infections, diabetic patients must avoid walking barefoot and wash their feet everyday with warm, soapy water. They must not soak their feet more than three minutes. This is because germs can pierce the skin more quickly if it becomes too soft.
After washing, the feet must be dried properly and rubbed with lotion or cream. Corns and calluses must be rubbed with a greasy cream to make the skin from cracking. (Source: The Hindu)
