The decision was taken by University Grants Commission that the National Eligibility Test (NET) or State-level Eligibility Test (SLET) for lecturer job, is mandatory qualification. After gap of ten years, the government decided to bring back the SLET.

The government is planning to give the responsibility to the Osmania University to conduct the SLET. The AP College Service Commission used to conduct the SLET in the state, but when TDP government removed the APCSC in 2002, then to get the required qualification, students were forced to apply for NET.

They conducted the NET in Hindi or English, which made it difficult for students from state to clear the test. This resulted in a shortage of NET qualified persons, who qualify that exam they are eligible for lecturer job in degree and post-graduate colleges and universities.

From this year the government was forced to bring back the SLET, with the UGC, writing NET or SLET are mandatory from 2009. SLET can be conducted by any competent institution, as per UGC guidelines.
