12 Aug 11: GHMC has started fixing new house number plates and street sign boards for the areas in the circles 8 & 9 (Abids & Himayatnagar), for which the assigning of new numbers were already done in the month of April. These new house numbers are simple with specified area code, street number and house number. An additional number will be added to the flats in the apartments.

As per the international numbering system, the number plates will be rectangular and blue in color for private buildings. Heritage buildings will have rectangular copper plates and the government buildings will have circular blue plates. Street sign boards will be installed by GHMC itself, whereas the house number plates will be installed by charging Rs.60.

For the municipalities of L.B.Nagar, Uppal, Rajendranagar, Kapra, Kukatpally and Malkajgiri, a consultant has been appointed to take up the works of assigning numbers. Another consultant will be appointed for the areas of Secunderabad, Khairtabad, Alwal, Qutubullapur, Patancheru, RC Puram and Serlingampally. And for the Old City area, the new house numbers will be given in the next 3 months.

The entire project consists of assigning new house numbers for 647 localities of which core city area (old MCH) has been divided in to 254 localities and the suburbs are divided in to 393 localities. The officials have said that the whole project is expected to be finished in 2 years.

As per the new numbering system, the street that is nearer to the city center will be numbered as street number one and it will continue in the clockwise or anti clockwise direction. Based on the direction of traffic and layout pattern, the numbers are assigned in increasing order in the locality. The localities are divided based on permanent reference points like ward or municipal boundary, physical boundaries such as water bodies, railway lines, etc. Every site is assigned a number irrespective of the plan approval and even the vacant sites are also assigned numbers.
