2 Aug 11: Due to the delay in the construction of optional routes by HMRL and GHMC which were suggested by city police, the city will have to face severe traffic congestion in the ongoing process of construction of metro rail. As a part of the traffic management action plan, the city police have proposed to develop eight alternative routes in the Punjagutta-Miyapur segment of corridor-1 and Nagole-Mettuguda segment of corridor-3, to minimize the traffic congestion and inconvenience during the construction process.

The commuters passing through the already congested Punjagutta-Miyapur segment will be worst hit as eight meters of the existing stretch will be cordoned off for construction, making the road still narrow. This stretch is 13,44 kn long and covers the busiest areas such as KPHB, JNTU, Balanagar, Kukatpally, Erragadda, Bharatnagar, ESI hospital, Moosapet, SR Nagar, Ameerpet and Punjagutta. There are three alternative routes proposed for this stretch – Miyapur to Moosapet, Punjagutta to Khairthabad and ESI to Srinagar Colony.

The Nagole-Mettuguda segment of corridor-3 is 7.5 km long and passes through Habsiguda, Uppal, NGRI, Tarnaka, and Lalaguda. Five alternative routes were proposed for this segment – Nagole road to Uppal main road, Tarnaka to Mettuguda, Tarnaka to Bhoiguda, Uppal main road to NH 202 and Habsiguda to Tarnaka.

The HMRL has said that apart from developing alternative routes, the HMRL will also contact GHMC, HMDA, CPDCL and carry out junction improvement and drainage works as soon as the monsoon is over.
