70 Kgs of Ephedrine, a Party Drug, Seized at Secunderabad Railway Station

Officials of revenue intelligence captured 70 kg of ephedrine valued at Rs 80,000 or more in the open market from two persons at the Secunderabad railway station.

Controlled under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985, ephedrine is used in the manufacture of the party drug-Amphet-mine Tye Stimulant (ATS).

The drug is a prescribed one for respiratory ailments such as asthma. It is popular in countries such as Malaysia, China, Indonesia, Australia and Japan.

The drug was recognized as one that must be controlled under the UN Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, 1988. Under Indian NDPS Act, it is a controlled substance.
