According to HMWSSB data, there are more than one lakh sewerage connections in the GHMC limits, of which most are unauthorised and illegal. Entities such as restaurants, hostels, hotels, private hospitals, multiplexes, theatres and function halls indulge in such illegal connections and thus, dodge levies collected as water cess by the authorities.
Reportedly, there is a separate tariff policy on the anvil for residential, individual domestic, individual non-domestic, multi-storeyed residential complexes, commercial complexes, shopping malls, hospitals, hotels, guest houses, cinema halls, multiplexes and function halls.
Also, any premise with plinth area up to 80 sq. mt will be not be charged. Areas between 81 and 200 sq. mt will be levied Rs.50 a month.
The maximum charges are up to Rs.10,000 and above for hotels and guest houses as per the number of rooms. HMWS & SB is planning to take measures for the existing authorised connections first and then the illegal ones.
