If the civic authorities in the city do not take strong steps to improve sanitation, there is a major public health risk. Health and urban development personnel have warned the danger of trash lying uncleared, which is a serious hazard to health.

Malaria and dengue cases have doubled. 430 cases of malaria have been reported in 2012 as against 200 in 2011. The corresponding numbers for dengue cases is 300 and 150. Cases of water-borne diseases such as cholera and jaundice have also shown a rising trend.

The Union government is not going to fund the local civic bodies under JNNURM-II, if the civic bodies do not improve their services. Experts are of the opinion that people are also to blame as they are not taking part in the development process at appropriate levels.
