Places to Buy Good Kites and Manjas in Hyderabad

You can see a number of kite shops sprouting in streets of the city during Sankranthi season. Many people in the nearby areas purchase kites from these shops. The kites and manjas in these shops typically tend to be of less quality and more expensive. Many of the shop owners are not experts in this business. The same people sell Rakhis during Raksha Bandhan, crackers during Diwali and Ganesh idols during Ganesh Chaturthi.

If you are looking for some good kites, manjas and charaks at reasonable prices, better go to the places where the shop owners are specialists in this field. For your convenience, we have listed some of the areas that are wholesale markets for kites and manjas. You can buy from any of these wholesale markets nearest to you.
Sankranthi Kites
Begum Bazaar
In Begum Bazaar, there are many shops that sell kites, but Motilal and Balaji kite shops are the two famous shops that are in this business since decades and have made a name for themselves as those who sell quality kites and manjas. The prices here are fixed but are reasonable. They do not cheat and give one rate for one person and some other price for another person. You can expect lot of rush here because the shops are small and crowded. If you are not aware of the location, you can ask anybody near Begum Bazaar Chatri for correct address. The shops are open till 10 PM in night from New Year to Sanskranthi time. So it is best to go in the night for good shopping experience.

Mangalhat, Dhoolpet
Dhoolpet area is popular to buy kites because this is the place where the manufacturing of kites and thread manjas is done. The entire stretch from Mangalhat to Dhoolpet is filled with kite shops. It is a wholesale market where you can find kites in various shapes and sizes and manjas of different varieties. Going to Dhoolpet is not a great idea if you are not good in judging the quality of the manja. Almost, all the other shops will buy the kites from this wholesale market. One advantage of this place is you could get good quality at reasonable price.

Gulzar House
Gulzar House is an old kite and manja market which is located between Charminar and Madina building. The place has dozens of shops starting from Gulzar House road till the Dabeerpura stretch. The whole stretch has kite shops that sell kites and manjas of different varieties. Buying at Gulzar House is very economical as you get to save some money, but at the same time you need to purchase at least dozen kites, because it is a wholesale market and the rates are fixed – no bargain.

You will also find people preparing kites and manjas at Gulzar House. While some people go there for the cheap prices, many others do not prefer because the quality is not good. Some claim that Gulzar House kites tear quicker, and do not fly as well.

Warasiguda
In Warasiguda there are about 10 to 20 kite shops, that sell variety of kites. Finding these shops is very easy as they are located on the Warasiguda main road itself.

Bata, Secunderabad
There are some 15 to 20 wholesale shops at Bata showroom, near Sri Ujjaini Mahankali temple, Secunderabad. You will find different variety of kites and manjas not only from the local market but also imported from Mumbai. Many retailers in and around Secunderabad area come here to purchase kites, manjas and charaks. If you are living in that area, visiting these shops is really worth it, as you can buy many varieties at reasonable prices.

We hope this information will save you some time and money. Have a safe and enjoyable Sankranthi.

Manja from India is like Vintage cars. Beautiful and awe inspiring but not practical. After 2 years of experimentation, horror, remorse and finally acceptance. I decided I WILL NOT buy Indian manja this year – neither from Bareilly, Gulzar house or Begum bazar.

The cotton thread is no match to the superior industrially manufactured nylon thread coated with abrasives.

Its like comparing bow and arrow with a modern gun. The gun wins that’s why the Indian army does not arm its soldiers with Bow and Arrows.

Agree 100% with Venkat. As regards kites – I prefer the Hyderabadi Dhoolpet Indian kites any day to the plastic kites or the north Indian kites – they are lighter and more maneuverable.

Only for beginners it makes sense to give the plastic kites so they will not tear the kite as they learn.

But choose plastic kites carefully. 80% of them have poor quality bamboo frames – so instead of helping learn flying kites quickly it can take longer with plastic kites.

      Enjoy…

Gulzar house prices are cheaper and so is the quality of kites / manja. Never been afraid of manja from Gulzar house. I see kites high in the air that suddenly get torn – cannot help but think they are from Gulzar House. Workmanship of kites is better from Dhoolpet.
