The government has decided to increase penalty for illegal property within GHMC limits. The GHMC Act has been amended accordingly. With this, there will be penalty as high as 100% compared 25% before. Thus, an owner of an illegal building who used to pay Rs one lakh per year now has to pay Rs two lakh per year as property tax. The aim of this measure is to curb illegal construction.
Under the amended GHMC Act, the municipal authorities need not demolish illegal buildings. The owners of these building can be penalized every year.
