The number of people suffering from tuberculosis (TB) that cannot be cured by drugs is rising. It has also caused many deaths. According to World Lung Foundation, if effective measures are not taken, it will destroy the health of the community, which took many decades to achieve.
Further, thousands of cases go unreported. 473 people have been reported to be suffering from drug resistant TB in Hyderabad since 2008. Of these, about 70 died since the same year.
According to official sources, the infrastructure to manage cases of drug resistant TB is not enough. Also, hospitals do not have enough diagnosis facilities. This has resulted in people suffering from the disease not going to hospitals. This has resulted in high risk to such people.
