After a hectic work schedule for the whole week, many Hyderabadi’s look forward to chill out with families and friends in the near by locations. There are many scenic spots and good hang out areas not too far from the city to unwind the stress and relax with the nature. Apart from theme parks, resorts and religious places there are many lakes and reservoirs around the city, that are perfect for the weekend fun, within the distance of 3 to 4 hours drive.
Few of the places which are worth visiting around Hyderabad city are :
Pocharam Dam Reservoir
Pocharam Dam Reservoir is the best spot to go for camping and have some weekend fun with family and friends. The place is located at 110 Km from Hyderabad, 15 kms from Medak town on the Narsapur – Medak road. It has a back water lake, surrounded by the forest and a beautiful wildlife sanctuary. The place used to be the hunting ground for Nizams but later was declared as wildlife sanctuary as it has become home for various bird species. As an evidence for historical connection, the place has an old Nizam bungalow constructed almost a century back, between the years 1916 and 1922. Pocharam lake is a perfect place to enjoy fishing and watch some exotic species of the avian family birds that often visit this area.
Manjeera wildlife sanctuary and reservoir is located in Medak district of Telangana State, at a distance of 90 km on the Mumbai highway when traveling from the Hyderabad city. The place is also famous for crocodile sanctuary, as one can see hundreds of crocodiles bathing in the muddy water in the hot sun. This is also the place from where drinking water is provided for many localities in Hyderabad and Secunderabad areas.
Laknavaram lake is one of the popular tourists spots in Telangana which is about 70 km in distance from Warangal, 6 km from Govindaraopet and 220 km from Hyderabad city. Situated in the dense forest of Warangal, amidst the thick green tress, the lake spreads over wide area which is supplying water to thousands of acres of irrigation land. It is also associated with the ancient history, connecting to Kakatiya rulers, who took the initiation to build this lake with many islands and long hanging bridge.
Another popular tourist spot in Telangana is Pakhal Lake which is of about 60 km distance from Warangal and 200 km from Hyderabad city. Unlike other natural water resources, this is a man made lake, built by Kakatiya ruler, Ganapathidev, around 1213 A.D, that is spread across vast area of over 30 sq kms. The lake is also associated with wildlife sanctuary, harboring many wild animals, reptiles and birds.
The Koil sagar reservoir
The reservoir is about 130 kms from Hyderabad on Bangalore Highway, located in Koilsagar village in Mahaboob Nagar district. It is one of the worth watching picnic spots surrounded by beautiful hills, constructed on Peddavagu, a minor tributary of Krishna river. The place has huge potential to attract visitors during weekends and holidays because of its amazing scenic beauty and traditional touch of many temples.
Nagarjuhna sagar is quite popular place among the tourists as it has both ancient archeological significance as well as scenic attractions. Located in Nalgonda district, at a distance of 166 km from Hyderabad, the place is associated with ancient history, that traces back to Sathavahanas and Ikshvaku rulers. The name of the place itself is taken from Nagarjuna, one of the famous Buddhist monks who stayed in this place during 2nd century AD. Prior to that, the place was popularly known as Vijayapuri. This beautiful landscape has many tourist attractions nearby which includes Nagarjuna Sagar dam, wildlife sanctuary, museum and Ethipotala falls at a distance of 11 Kms from the dam. In order to have a delightful experience of watching the stream of large waterfall through the dam, many visitors come to this place between September and January months, during the peak monsoon season, usually when gates are open.
