With rapid increase in population in Hyderabad, many open places belonging to the government are being encroached by civil structures. In order to avoid this and also to develop greenery in the city, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) proposed to turn around 2,500 to 3,000 open spaces into mini parks, neighborhood parks and community parks.
Very little area of the 650 sq. km of municipal area has green vegetation, and 1,147 open spaces out of 3,000 in the GHMC limits have been developed to parks by the municipal body. The proposal is made following the orders of the Supreme Court to avoid changing the land use patterns of these spaces to any other purpose.
As per the new guidelines of the corporation, a mini park with less than 2,000 sq. m. of size will be developed in the midst of about 500-2,500 houses. The neighborhood park of 2,000-10,000 sq. m. is supposed to be developed about 2 km. from the residential locality. Special seating arrangements and drinking water facilities will be provided in these parks. A community park of 5-50 acres of size will have facilities as in neighborhood parks. However, they are also supposed to include water bodies, boating and other facilities for recreation.
