The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) listed in its website the top 1,000 property tax defaulters including individuals, private firms, government departments, public sector undertakings, colleges, schools and places of worship which had to pay Rs. 149 crore to the corporation.
In a current difficult situation in need of funds for different developmental activities, the property tax collection is the only major source of income for the GHMC. Special efforts of the corporation from June 2011 had gained Rs. 220 crore by July and Rs. 20 crore after July. In an effort to get the tax dues from the top tax defaulters, it had included their details in the website. The Hyderabad Asbestos Cement Pro is found to occupy the first place among the tax defaulters. It is estimated to pay about Rs. 18.96 crore to the GHMC. Some others include Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited (IDPL), Bhavani Nagar (Balanagar) with Rs. 10.60 crore arrears, Lake Plaza Hotels Ltd and others, Somajiguda with Rs. 5.06 crore, HMT Ltd, CIE Gandhi Nagar with Rs. 3.14 crore, Balayogi Paryatak Bhavan, that belongs to the AP Tourism Development Corporation, with Rs. 2.72 crore and Annapurna Enterprises, Abids (South) with arrears of Rs 2.42 crore.
About Rs. 523 crore was collected in the fiscal year 2010-11 against the demand of Rs. 630 crore. However, this time, the corporation has a property tax demand of Rs. 1,126 crore. About Rs. 396 crore is demanded from Central Zone including areas like Khairatabad, Punjagutta, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills and Somajiguda. Furthermore, a tax demand of Rs. 355 crore from the South Zone, Rs. 138 crore each from West Zone and North Zone and Rs. 98 crore from East Zone has been found.
