The 200% fine which is imposed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on unauthorized constructions has been kept on stay. A serious resentment from the owners of commercial buildings due to the indiscriminate 25 percent penalty on unauthorized constructions has been evident recently. In addition, the corporation is even involved in levying fine on buildings that were regularized under the Building Regularization Scheme and the subsequent Building Penalization Scheme.

The corporation actually has a right either to demolish the unauthorized constructions or impose 200% penalty on them as per the directions from the Andhra Pradesh Lokayukta. However, it has proposed to set its own house and deal with the unauthorized construction penalty issue. Till then, no notices will be sent to the owners of such constructions. However, it may be mentioned that 200 percent penalty can be imposed on the illegal buildings by the corporation as per the GO 86 with the calculations of the penalty done based on the land value.
