As of now, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is levying 25 percent penalty on unauthorized buildings. This is now, however, being replaced by 200 percent additional property tax as penalty in order to discourage illegal constructions. This penalty will be applicable if the entire building is unauthorized. If the deviations in the building account for up to 10 percent from the approved plan, the penalty will be extended up to 50 percent. Buildings with unauthorized additional floors, or those which are converted from residential to commercial use without permissions will be levied 100 percent additional tax as penalty. Moreover, as per the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Act of 1955, if the illegal building is an obstruction, or risky to other properties or lives, it can be ordered for demolition too.
