In order to protect the health and lives of the night time sweepers on the roads from pollution and accidents, GHMC had now decided to use mechanized sweeping machines. The corporation presently has 1500 sweepers among which 80% are women. The GHMC already has 6 big machines and 20 to 25 small sweeping units. It is now planning to but 10 to 15 more big sweeping units.
Though some sections of GHMC are against the mechanized sweeping, stating that large number of sweepers would lose their jobs, the authorities have confirmed it that the workers will not be retrenched and will be shifted for cleaning internal lanes and areas having less traffic during day time.
