After the formation of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in 2007, the second GHMC elections were held recently in February 2016, for complete 150 wards in the city of Hyderabad. In the prior 2009 GHMC elections all the political parties had their share with mixed set of results except TRS because it did not participate in the election contest. But things have changed in 2016 polls for TRS as it acquired 99 seats out of 150, which shared 66% of the winning list.
As usual in 2016 polls, AIMIM secured its position with average number of seats whereas TDP, BJP and Congress lagged behind with poor results when compared to 2009. Congress, which previously had 52 corporators in previous GHMC council between 2009 and 2014, has secured only two places – Nacharam and Patancheruvu. NDA, the alliance between TDP & BJP didn’t work out well as expected, and got only 5 seats put together. Loksatta party (LSP), formed an alliance with the two other communist parties to contest in 68 wards, didn’t even come close to give a strong opposition to any other major parties.
For our readers convenience, we have compared party wise results of GHMC elections from 2016 and 2009 showing the number of wards secured by major political parties and variation in results considering both the years.
Party Name | 2016 Elections seats out of 150 wards (variation) | 2009 Elections seats out of 150 wards |

Congress | 2 (-50) | 52 |
