Narayanan Krishnan, we probably must not have heard this name till date, but the story of this man will surely touch your heart.
Story so far……
Way back in June 2002 (the turning point in his life), Narayanan Krishnan an award-winning chef with a five-star hotel group in Bangalore was short-listed to work with a five-star hotel in Switzerland. Before leaving to Europe, he visited his parents who live in Madurai. There he witnessed a scene that changed the path of his life forever.
He saw a very old man eating his own human waste for food. The scene moved him so deeply that he decided to devote his life to feed the people who do not get food to eat. He quit his job within a week, and began supplying free meals for the homeless ever since in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.
Foundation of Akshaya Trust charity in 2003
In 2003, Narayanan Krishnan founded the Akshaya Trust charity, a not-for-profit organization that cooks and distributes fresh meals for the homeless in Madurai. The dishes he prepares consist of simple, vegetarian food that is packed and distributed to over 400 people three times (breakfast, lunch and dinner) a day.
It is learnt that, from 6,300 meals in 2002, the foundation grew to serve 36,000 meals in January 2010. With the help of his team, he has served over 1,900,000 till date without missing a single day.
Narayanan Krishnan’s day starts with…
His day starts at 4:00 am when along with his team he cuts vegetables, grinds spices and cooks breakfast for about 400 people. Then it’s back to the kitchen to make preparations for the mid-day meal. After a short break, he and his team are busy preparing dinner. He covers about 200 kilometers daily in a donated van and hand-feeds the needy people. Sometimes he and his team attend to the sick people or give them a shave, a bath and a haircut.
CNN recognizes Narayanan Krishnan as one of the World’s Top 10 Heroes of 2010
Narayanan Krishnan won global recognition when he stood on the stage of the CNN Heroes and won the honor of one of the top ten CNN Heroes of the year 2010. This recognition brought to Akshaya the much needed help from several supporters world wide.
In May 2013, Akshaya Trust opened a facility for homeless people
Akshaya home was inaugurated on May 9th, 2013. Around 480 people live in the 3.2-acre facility on Madurai’s outskirts. All three meals are prepared fresh every day and are served to the 450 residents of the Akshaya home.
