People of Hyderabad have almost forgot the chirping of birds and the gentle rustle of leaves. Today, they are prone to harsh noises emitted from generators, construction machines, music systems next door, firecrackers, vehicles and their horns.

Noise pollution in Hyderabad is rising alarmingly. According to a study by Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), Hyderabad is ranked second after Chennai in noise pollution levels.

Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) states that till September 2009, the average noise level recorded at Hyderabad was 80.66 dB. The standard limit is said to be 65 dB. Panjagutta crossroads is said to be the noisiest area in Hyderabad. Next to it were the busy Paradise junction at Secunderabad, Charminar and Abids. Even sensitive areas such as KBR Park and Zoo Park are said to have the noise levels above the standard limit.

According to APPCB, noise pollution limits in decibels:

Day (6 am to 9 pm) Night (9 pm to 6 am)
Industrial area 75.0 70.0
Commercial area 65.0 55.0
Residential area 55.0 40.0
Sensitive areas 50.0 40.0

Noise pollution may not affect a person instantly. But it acts as a slow poison, affecting a person both physically and mentally. Exposure to sound causes, insomnia, depression, sleeping disorders, increases blood pressure, headache and tiredness. Excessive exposure to sound for a very long period of time may cause deafness and cardio vascular diseases.

Noise pollution disturbs the communication and reduces performance at schools or at work. It also reduces our energy to work.

Many people are unaware of the regulations as well as the consequences of the noise pollution. Concerned authorities instead of neglecting this issue should focus more on awareness and steps to reduce the noise pollution. Authorities should provide silent zones, especially close to schools, hospitals and other sensitive areas. We hope the people will definitely cooperate with the authorities in reducing the noise pollution.
