When the Union HRD ministry has been dealing with deemed and private universities to oppress for not obtaining accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), most of its own universities are showing old NAAC grades, which are no longer credible.
Nearly five universities and 40 degree and post graduate colleges affiliated to different universities in the state are advertising NAAC ratings which have already expired. The issue has become a dilemma for the ministry particularly since the union HRD minister, Mr Kapil Sibal, is intending to make “NAAC accreditation” compulsory for all universities and colleges from the next academic year.
The list of unreliable universities consists of top-class universities such as the JNTU in Hyderabad, affiliated colleges of the Osmania University and affiliated colleges of the Andhra University.
While accreditation is not compulsory, NAAC rules mentions that grades are legitimate only for five years. Representatives of some universities whose ratings have terminated blamed the “lengthy process” of NAAC to provide accreditation.
