Top Ranking Military Officer Gets Convicted Over Scam Charges

Former Deputy Chief of Army Staff-designate, and former 33 Corps Commander, Lt Gen P K Rath, had become the highest ranking officer, who was found guilty in land corruption. He is found to be convicted for 7 charges, clearing 4 charges.

General Court Martial (GCM), headed by Lt. I J Singh charged him for  issue of ‘No Objection Certificate’ to a private builder, granting permission for construction of educational institution, in a piece of land, which is adjacent to Sukna Military station in West Bengal. The other charge being, for signing and not informing seniors in the Eastern Command, about the MoU with Geetanjali Trust, regarding construction of educational institution.

Rath was also involved in wrongdoing alongside Lt Gen Avadesh Prakash, the then Military Secretary to the Army Chief, Lt Gen Ramesh Halguly, the then 11 Corps Commander, and Maj Gen P K Sen. Rath and Prakash were ordered with Court martial and administrative action was taken against other two officers.

Prakash, is facing disciplinary actions, is the senior most officer among the four. Halguly is currently serving as the Director General of Military Training in New Delhi Army Headquarters. Rath, was then designated as Deputy Chief of Army Staff, but his appointment was cancelled, when the scandal came to light in 2008.

The final punishment that is to levied on P K Rath will be announced on Sunday.
