GHMC has presented a draft plan for making the Hyderabad city slum-free before the World Bank team, which visited the city. GHMC has explained the developments planned for slums under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and Rajiv Awaz Yojana (RAY).

In the presentation given to the World Bank delegation, the GHMC said that it is planning to make the city slum-free within five years, with an estimated cost of Rs.12,054 crore. It has also informed that 12% of the city’s area is covered by slums and 26% of the city’s population lives in slum areas. Further, there are 1,476 slums in GHMC limits (985 slums in core MCH, covering around 66% of slum population and 491 slums in the peripheral areas, covering 34% of the population), of which 1,179 are notified.

Further, according to GHMC sources, 16 slums on various tank beds and on hazardous locations have to be relocated to protect the lakes from encroachments.
