Hyderabad-based National Environment Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) suggested for linking Osmansagar and Himayatsagar with the yet to come up Godavari drinking water supply project (Maulana Abul Kalam Hyderabad Srujala Sravanthi Scheme) and the Pranahita-Chevella project for long term benefits.

Based on NEERI studies, the follow-up study by expert committee submitted a report for improving the lakes.

The suggestions in the report include dividing the improvement plan into short, long-term and medium-term, banning fishing, bathing, washing and tourism in the reservoirs, growing specific types of fish that are useful in clearing water, construction of garland canal to prevent pollution, strict implementation of GO 111 to protect catchment areas of both the reservoirs and construction of regional sewerage treatment plans in villages adjoining the water bodies.

Further, the suggestions could be followed up under JNNURM Phase II.
