Do you know Hyderabad district stood last among the 23 districts in the recently announced 10th class results in the state? This may be because of the practice of half-day sessions in government schools in the twin cities.

There are many schools in twin cities offering both Telugu and Urdu media on a shift basis. According to district education officials, there were over 30 schools operating like this because of lack of space to accommodate all the students in one session. But it is compulsory that schoolchildren should spend most of their day time at school. The school authorities should be in a position to conduct full day classes for students of both media.

Though there are many governmentowned school buildings, they are in a very bad condition. Schools constructed under Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) are proving to be insufficient. However, many government schools have been functioning from private buildings as of now. District education officilas said that private buildings woud be hired to overcome this space problem to run full day schools.
