The central government is planning to set up vehicle fitness centers in 10 States of the country, with an estimated budget of Rs.15 crore per each center. This decision is taken to reduce the number of accidents on roads due to poor fitness of vehicles. These centers will issue the fitness certificate by thoroughly screening the vehicles brakes, steering efficiency, headlights, pollution levels, etc. with the help of special equipments as opposed to the present manual checking.

Presently, all transport vehicles including cabs and heavy vehicles such as trucks and RTC buses are acquiring fitness certificate every year, as per the rules of Motor Vehicle Act, from their Regional Transport Offices.
