18 Jun 11: The Center for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD) is a national institute that comes under Department of Biotechnology, under Ministry of Science and Technology. This institute is now being set up at Uppal in the Survey of India (SoI) campus. The SoI has exchanged 20 acres of its 200 acres area to CDFD for the CDFD building land at Gandipet. SoI is planning to set up its academic center at this building in Gandipet.
The Ministry which is offering funds for the construction of this new facility is in the process of selecting the architecture. After being separated from CCMB, the CDFD was functioning from a building at Nacharam. Later in 2002, a new building was constructed at 10 acre piece of land in Gandipet. But objections were raised by AP Pollution Control Board, stating that as per GO 111, no polluting industry should be established under the 10 km range of any water body. As this building was under the catchment area of both Gandipet and Himayathsagar reservoirs, which are both sources of drinking water for the city, the CDFD has to shift its building to a new building in MJ market. While its laboratory was at MJ market, its administrative building was in the nearby area.
Now, with this national institute too coming at Uppal, Uppal has become a hub of list of national institutes, which includes, NIN, IICT, NGRI and CCMB.
