22 Jun 11: The cleaning works of three nalas connecting Hussainsagar are being taken up by Hyderabad Metropolitan Authority (HMDA) under the Hussainsagar Lake and Catchment Area Improvement Project (HCIP), with the financial assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency.
These works include dredging and disposal of waste sediments from the nalas connecting Hussainsagar. There are four inlets which are connecting Hussainsagar and they are – Balkapur, Picket, Banjara hills and Kukatpally nala.
The dredging of all the three nalas except for Kukatpally nala will be taken up presently, as the three nalas are categorized as non-hazardous and nutrient rich. Therefore, the dredged material obtained from these nalas will be sent to Jawaharnagar dumping site. As Kukatpally nalas dredging material is considered hazardous, the authorities are working on separate formulations for this, under the guidance of AP Pollution Control Board.
