The Hussainsagar cleaning operation has begun in full swing. The Chief Minister launched the cleanup work on December 7; it actually started two days prior to the launch.
Four nalas join Hussainsagar Lake – Balkapur nala, Banjara nala, Kukatpally nala and Picket nala. The work began at Picket nala and about 1,200 cubic metre of sediment has been dredged in two days. At Picket nala the dredging work is expected to complete in 110 days and after the work is completed, the Banjara nala dredging work will be taken up and then followed by Balkapur nala.
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) plans to dredge 10 lakh cubic metre of sediment and around 12 lakh tonne from the four nalas that flow into Hussainsagar.
The dredging at Kukatpally nala has been referred to the Environment Protection Training and Research Institute (EPTRI) after high existence of dangerous elements was detected.
It is a yearlong project and hopefully all the four nalas are cleaned on time. Temporarily the dredged material is being dried at Sanjeevaiah Park and once it is dried, it will be shifted to Jawaharnagar dump yard.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has assisted around Rs 370 crore for the cleanup project of Hussainsagar.
