If roads are bad, people in the city tend to blame GHMC. But the fact is, the maintenance responsibility of most roads in the city belongs to Roads and Buildings (R&B) department. Annoyed with the public response and to ensure the quality of all the roads, GHMC held meetings with R&B department, and has decided to acquire the repair and maintenance responsibilities of roads under the purview of R&B.
Once the proposal is approved and the procedure is completed, all roads barring the national highways that are under the R&B will be handed over to GHMC.
GHMC has already 19 state highways under its purview. With this new proposal, the civic body becomes responsible for repair and maintenance of around 190 km stretch of roads in the city. However, R&B will retain the ownership of these roads, and only the repair and maintenance will be taken by GHMC.
The roads that GHMC will take up are –
