Debit card holders have to enter PIN numbers whenever they swipe the card. The objective of this norm is to minimize frauds. In June, RBI had extended the deadline for making PIN punching mandatory at point of sales until November 30 at the request of banks.
SBI has reportedly asked its customers that ATM/debit card not to hand over to any person. Moreover, customers are also advised not to keep any PIN records in physical form. After swiping the car at point of sales, the merchant will punch the transaction amount, followed by entering PIN number by customer for completing the transaction.
For credit cards, this has become mandatory for international transactions including transactions on the Internet.
