All that glitters is not gold
You can’t tell a book by its cover

All these sayings are perfectly applicable to our Cyberabad. Fancy buildings, posh restaurants, wide roads – areas around the city including Jubilee Hills, Hitech City, Uppal, etc., may look great, look wise but you know what? There is no underground sewerage system in Cyberabad!

Cyberabad literally sitting on a septic bomb
It’s more than a decade since Cyberabad was established, but it doesn’t have a well-planned sewer system – it still is dependent on septic tanks! Septic tanks are the primitive form of sewage disposal. With increasing population, septic tanks will not be able to take the load for long.

People in Cyberabad, particularly those in Hitech city areas talk about going green and being eco-friendly. You don’t have proper sewer system, what is the use of having fancy eco-friendly paints/buildings?

If you really see, the core Hyderabad city has good sewerage system. In fact, old city has two separate sewer systems – one for sewerage and one for flood water.

It is learnt that, nearly Rs 150 crore was spend on underground drainage system in Cyberabad. But still the drainage networks of a large number of colonies in Cyberabad are not yet connected to the main sewerage outlets.

Major health concern
The sewage problem is a big issue as it gives rise to health problems. The sites become a breeding ground for flies, mosquitoes and bacteria, endangering the health of people living nearby and causing environmental pollution. Environmentalists warn that sewage contains nitrogen that can cause serious health problems.

A recent study showed that, 700-800 million litres per day (MLD) of sewage is dumped in to the Musi River including domestic, municipal and industrial effluent waste waters that come from surrounding places of Hyderabad because they have no sewerage system.

To make matters worse, people living in peripheral areas depend on ground water for drinking purposes since they don’t get water through the pipeline network even once a week.
