Ramakrishna Math, Hyderabad, is a branch of ‘Ramakrishna Mission’, with its headquarters at Belur in Karnataka. The Ramakrishna Math in Belur was established by Swami Vivekananda in 1898 in memorial of his guru ‘Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa’.
Ramakrishna Math of Hyderabad got affiliated to Ramakrishna Mission in 1974. It is situated on the southern side of Ramakrishna Math Marg in Domalguda, behind Tank Bund.
The various departments of the Ramakrishna Math include Ramakrishna Universal temple, VIOL (Vivekananda Institute Of Languages), Vivekananda Institute Of Human Excellence, Vivekananda Health Centre, Vivekananda Library, Gita Darshan (an audio-visual museum on the Gita), Art Gallery, Telugu Publication Department, Book Stall and Sharada Vanam.
All these departments serve many activities on behalf of the Math. Some of the basic activities of the math are teaching of foreign languages, personality development programs, feeding the poor, education for economically backward children, mobile hospital, health center, library, relief and rehabilitation of the victims of natural calamities, etc. All these activities are either offered for free or for nominal fee.
Spoken English course offered by VIOL (Vivekananda Institute of Languages) is very famous in Hyderabad. Other foreign languages which they offer are German, French, Japanese, Chinese and Spanish. The Institute was started in 1981 and has a team of about 65 highly qualified, experienced, and dedicated and dynamic teachers for whom teaching is more of a “passion and a mission” than merely a commercial profession. They admit a limited number of people for each session. Especially, for admission in Spoken English course, they give preference to under-privileged first (people with Non-English medium background or who have scored lower marks in English subject in academics) rather than the people with merit – in contrary to the admission in many other private institutions.
