6 Jun 11: The metro rail authorities and traffic police have decided to deploy 2,500 traffic marshals on the routes where the earth excavation works are going to begin for metro rail project to avoid any inconvenience to commuters. The L&T metro rail Hyderabad limited has currently started these works on two stretches: Miyapur – Punjagutta and Nagole – Mettuguda. A joint inspection was carried out in these two stretches by the metro rail authorities and city traffic police, to identify the bottlenecks.

An eight meter space is required on the central median of the road or on one side of the road, which will be barricaded to conduct excavation works. Only the remaining space will have to be used by the commuters, hence, high traffic regulation is needed. As these two stretches are traffic-dense stretches, round the clock, alternate routes to divert the traffic are also identified.

As there is no sufficient man power with the traffic department to regulate the traffic while the works are in progress, the metro rail authorities have taken the responsibility to depute traffic marshals in these areas to regulate the traffic. These personnel will be given training on regulating the traffic and the behavior with commuters.

Even the retired traffic police personnel will be deployed as supervisors, to supervise traffic. These marshals and supervisors will have a dress code with logos of metro rail and traffic police imprinted on them. These marshals will be deployed at three points – spots where excavation work starts, at alternate routes and U-turns.
