27 March 2011: The Fire Prevention Wing (FPW) of GHMC found that there are about 1,169 private, recognized schools which lack minimum fire safety measures, putting the lives of many students at risk. It issued notices to all the schools to abide by fire safety norms, failing which the schools will not be allowed to reopen in June. The GHMC gave time till October 2011 to comply with the rules it issued. Of all the schools that received notices, less than 100 schools have reacted. Apart from the schools, the wing also issued notices to hundreds of bars, restaurants, function halls, hospitals and nursing homes, shopping malls and complexes.
