According to the estimates of the National Sample Survey (NSS), urban unemployment in AP is highest at all India level. Unemployment among men in urban areas was 4.1% and 6.6% among women for the period July 2011 to June 2012. Unemployment rate in urban areas across the state is 4.7%. The national urban unemployment is 2.8%.

According to the NSS, the employed are those, who spent a big part of the previous 365 days in some work for money. This definition is for both organised and unorganised sectors. The finding is based on surveying 2,972 households in urban regions of the state.

According to experts, the high rate of unemployment is because of the sick manufacturing sector, which is because of the lack of regular and uninterrupted power supply in cities such as Hyderabad.
