27 April 2011: The GHMC has set up a new cell to deal with the problems of pedestrians, where the pedestrians can lodge any kind of complaints they face. This cell is a part of comprehensive pedestrian policy which is formulated by GHMC officials and representatives of NGO’s headed by Right to Walk Foundation.
This policy was formulated on the directions from Human Rights Commission. The policy also proposes preventing encroachments of footpaths, widening of footpaths from 6 feet to 12 feet, removal of electricity transformers, checking urination on footpaths, providing street furniture and construction of skywalks.
This policy is being integrated with the overall transport policy for the city. Further, it is said that traffic police will not only monitor vehicular traffic but also mobility of the pedestrians.
