14 Jun 11: Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), is preparing a set of guidelines to food items manufacturers, which will instruct them to compulsorily specify additional details of the food items on packages, to enable the consumer know more about what he/she is eating and then take an even more informed decision on buying the food item. A committee is formed to discuss about this matter.

These details which are needed to be provided are quantity of salt, sugar, saturated fats and trans fats. The labeling should also provide how much salt and sugar would be enough for the consumer to have per day.

Further, every nutritional claim that is made by the manufacturers on the packaging should have evidence and findings, which has to be shown to the authorities and also to be printed on the packages for public information.
