Major Developments in Hyderabad – June 2012

The month of June, has been the most crucial month for the Hyderabad, with most of the developments impacting the day-to-day functions of the general public in the Hyderabad city. Some of the significant developments such as tatkal tickets, increase in RTC buses, relaxation of building rules, increase in vegetable prices, etc., have percussion on normal life routine of Hyderabadis.

On the other hand, there were special drives conducted and reports released by various departments (educational, RTA, traffic, crime departments), which served as eye-openers for the general public.

General:

  • The South Central Railway has announced that, from now it will be giving priority to ‘Tatkal’ waiting list passengers over general waiting list passengers, while allotting tickets for vacant berths available in the additional coaches attached on a day-to-day requirement basis.
  • RTC has started operating 115 new buses (adding to already existing fleet of 787 buses) on the existing routes for the students to help them reach schools and colleges. Of them, 32 will operate on short distance routes.
  • HMWSSB is creating a data bank of all its customers based on the complaints registered by the citizens at HMWSSB’s Metro Customer Care (on 155313). This data bank will hold all the necessary customer details such as CAN number, cheque bounce payments and any other deviations like defaults in payments as received from field reports, vigilance reports, etc.
  • Keeping in view the increasing prices of vegetables, government has launched a scheme to sell vegetables at subsidized rates. Under this scheme, the vegetables are sold in two different family packages, at Rs.49 and Rs.99, which consist of 6 and 12 varieties of vegetables respectively – Rs.99 pack consists of 1kg each of onion, tomato, potato, half-kg each of brinjal, carrot, ladies finger, coccinia, cabbage, 250 grams green chilli and two types of leafy vegetables and Rs.49 pack, will have 1 kg each onion, tomato, half-kg each brinjal, potato, 250 grams green chilli and two types of leafy vegetables. This scheme is available at the five government-run Rythu Bazaars located at Erragadda, Mehdipatnam, Kukatpally, Saroornagar and Falaknuma, between 8.00 am to 10.00 am.
  • According to City Crime Records Bureau, the western parts of the city (S.R.Nagr, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Punjagutta), were found to be most unsafe for women, registering 126 of the total 176 cases registered against women in the city from January to May, 2012. The central areas of the city were found to have registered the least number of cases.
  • GHMC has started filing cases and imposing a fine of up to Rs.10,000 on persons who are dumping debris illegally and leading to defacement of public properties in the twin cities during nights.
  • CPDCL has integrated 5 more integrated customer services centers in the Hyderabad city. All the centers are present in its departmental premises at – Saifabad, Mehdipatnam, Bowenpally, Asmangadh and Rajendranagar.
  • As per the alert given by the Union Ministry, at all the American MNC’s in Cyberabad, security has been beefed up.
  • APTDC is offering flexible tourist options, hop-on and hop-off services for travelers to visit 12 historical and tourist venues in the city. These options allow tourists to spend more time at their favorite tourist spots. Some of the places included in this package are Jal Vihar, Chowmahalla Palace, Golconda Fort, Qutub Shahi Tombs, Snow world, etc.
  • As per the World health Organization’s initiative, the Hyderabad city traffic police are conducting frequent drives for enforcement against drunken driving on weekends between 10.00 pm and 1.00 am at selected places.
  • According to official reports from Ministry of Civil Aviation, among all the airports present in India, Delhi and Hyderabad airports have topped the complaints list registering 587 and 236 complaints (of the total 2,800) respectively. The complaints include issues such as bad food, lost luggage, poor service, etc.
  • The water board had stated that, the ground water levels in the city have dropped to all-time low, with the water table found at below 10 meter mark.
  • A control room has been set up at Secunderabad railway station to track illegal activities in and around the station and to attend to the complaints of passengers. Passengers, can dial 9440700040, 9440904873 or 040-27702337 to register their complaints or to report any suspicious activities.
  • The construction of piers on corridor I (Miyapur to L.B.Nagar); and soil testing and barricading works in the old city area, for the corridor II (JBS to Falaknuma) have started. Educational:

  • The Osmania University’s degree results were out, and the university has registered a pass percentage of 42.87, which is 7% drop from the past five years pass percentage.
  • From this academic year, JNTU Hyderabad, will have new format for its internal exams for its engineering students. As per this new format, the students have to take a computer based testing (CBT), which will be in the lines of TOEFL.
  • As per the government orders, non-resident Indian (NRI) quota in all the state engineering colleges is to be set at 5%, reducing from the current 15%.
  • In the recent drive against unrecognized schools carried out in the city by the district educational officials, 520 schools were found illegal in the GHMC limits.
  • In a special drive conducted by transport department to check the fitness levels of the various private school and college buses, as many as 2,500 school and college vehicles in the city and Ranga Reddy districts were found to be lacking fitness certificates.
  • Union government has proposed to introduce open book examination in 2013 CBSE exams and is going to do away with the existing system.

Real Estate:

  • The facility to register your property online from anywhere, has been extended to the Hyderabad city, as per the official statement made by the Ministry of Stamps and Registration.

  • The second phase of Layout Regularization Scheme (LRS) has ended on June 30. Even after 6 months, GHMC has found a poor response from plot owners with only 23,000 applications for regularisation of plots in unapproved layouts, being received by both GHMC and HMDA put together.
